You need a theory pass before you can sit your practical. Here is what the test involves and the quickest sensible way to get through it.
What the theory test involves
The DVSA car theory test has two parts, taken in one sitting at a test centre:
- Multiple choice — 50 questions drawn from the Highway Code, road signs, vehicle safety and driving behaviour. You need 43 correct to pass.
- Hazard perception — 14 video clips containing 15 developing hazards. You click when a hazard starts to develop; the earlier you spot it, the more points you score. The pass mark is 44 out of 75.
You must pass both parts in the same sitting. A theory pass is valid for two years — if you have not passed your practical in that time, you take the theory again.
Preparing in a week
Most people who fail do so on hazard perception, because it is the part you cannot revise by reading. A workable plan:
- Days 1–2: read the Highway Code sections on signs, road markings and junctions. Do not try to memorise everything — understand the pattern behind the signs.
- Days 3–5: work through practice question banks until you are consistently above 47 out of 50.
- Every day: 15 minutes of hazard perception clips. It is a rhythm you learn, not knowledge you acquire.
- Day 6: two full mock tests, timed, without notes.
Booking it
Book directly with the DVSA on GOV.UK — never through a third party charging a booking fee. You need your provisional licence number, an email address and a debit or credit card. Take your provisional licence with you on the day; without it the test cannot go ahead.
Common reasons people fail
- Clicking constantly through the hazard clips — the system detects this and scores zero for that clip
- Revising only questions, never clips
- Rushing the multiple choice instead of using the review flag
- Arriving without the right licence or ID
Do I need theory before booking my course?
No. We can hold your course dates while your theory is pending — but you cannot sit the practical without the pass, so book the theory as early as you can. If your theory date is tight, tell us and we will build the course around it.
Automatic learners: does the theory differ?
It does not. The theory test is the same whether you intend to take your practical in an automatic or a manual. The difference only appears on the practical, and on the licence you are issued afterwards.
